{"id":57,"date":"2019-10-02T10:55:16","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T10:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ishygddt.xyz.\/~blog\/?p=57"},"modified":"2022-08-25T08:10:51","modified_gmt":"2022-08-25T13:10:51","slug":"pcie-to-pci-adapters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ishygddt.xyz\/~blog\/2019\/10\/pcie-to-pci-adapters","title":{"rendered":"PCIe to PCI adapters"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to avoid replacing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=foxconn+OR849J\">motherboard<\/a> whose integrated sound is dying, and also actually use my <a href=\"https:\/\/goughlui.com\/2012\/11\/29\/tech-flashback-the-golden-age-of-sound-cards-and-creative-labs\/#:~:text=CT4780\">cool and nice retro sound card from 2000<\/a> again (it still sounds better than every integrated [cheapest-bid OEM Realtek integrated soundcard in discarded office equipment] I've ever heard!), losing which was perhaps the biggest downside to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dell.com\/support\/home\/us\/en\/04\/product-support\/product\/studio-xps-435\/\">upgrading<\/a> from my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dell.com\/support\/home\/us\/en\/04\/product-support\/product\/optiplex-gx620\/\">previous computer<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newegg.com\/Product\/SingleProductReview?ReviewID=10126709\">Previously, on \"my motherboard is failing component-by-component\"<\/a>)<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asmedia.com.tw\/eng\/e_show_products.php?cate_index=169&amp;item=114\">Asmedia 1083<\/a>-based aftermarket adapter [<a href=\"http:\/\/eshop.sintech.cn\/pcie-express-1x-to-pci-32bits-adapter-with-flex-cable-p-976.html\">sintech<\/a>{<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B00KZHDK4Q\">Amazon<\/a>}]\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Somewhat well-known, it seems, for being integrated into motherboards by reputable manufacturers who want to provide a legacy PCI slot when the CPU\/northbridge\/southbridge\/whatever doesn't \"natively\" support it<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/google.com\/search?q=asmedia+1083+adapter\">PLENTY<\/a>{<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s?k=asmedia+1083\">Amazon<\/a>}{<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newegg.com\/p\/pl?d=asmedia+1083\">Newegg<\/a>} of other companies sell equivalent packagings of this chip, so you can take your pick<\/li>\r\n<li>&#8230;of a bunch of identical knockoffs, none of which make it possible to use a full-height PCI chip without buying a separate riser cable.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diodes.com\/assets\/Datasheets\/PI7C9X111SL.pdf\">Pericom PI7C9X111SL<\/a>-based aftermarket adapter [<a href=\"http:\/\/eshop.sintech.cn\/pcie-express-x1-to-dual-pci-riser-extender-card-usb30-cable-p-977.html\">sintech<\/a>{<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B00KZHDSLQ\">Amazon<\/a>}] [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.startech.com\/Cards-Adapters\/Slot-Extension\/PCI-Express-to-PCI-Adapter-Card~PEX1PCI1\">StarTech<\/a>{<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0024CV3SA\">Amazon<\/a>}{<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newegg.com\/p\/N82E16815158165\">Newegg<\/a>}]\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>The chipset apparently supports turning a PCIe_x1 slot into <strong>two<\/strong> PCI ports<\/li>\r\n<li>Adapters based on it are about twice as expensive, but may not need a separate riser cable, so weigh the costs.<\/li>\r\n<li>For some reason, the chipset name is never associated with the product listing in an indexable way (title, description, etc), so <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">you can't just search for \"PI7C9X111SL\" and get usable results<\/span> (though Amazon has a few overpriced listings for \"PI7C9X\")<\/li>\r\n<li>A lot less common, it looks like only 2 manufacturers actually made aftermarket boards around this; though the fact that it's never mentioned in product titles\/descriptions means it's highly likely that my limited \"investigation\" for other packages returned a false negative.<\/li>\r\n<li>StarTech's implementation only provides one PCIe slot, and suffers from the same \"no-flex\" syndrome as the Asmedia-based adapters. (Who has half-height PCI cards, anyway?)<\/li>\r\n<li>sintech's implementation uses a cable with physical USB3 A-A form factor as a riser\/flex to connect the PCIe port to the chip without requiring a separate riser cable. <strong>THIS IS NOT ELECTRICALLY USB.<\/strong> IT IS, ELECTRICALLY, PCIe. <strong>DO NOT PLUG A USB DEVICE INTO THIS<\/strong>; AS YOU CAN SEE, THE PCIe DAUGHTERBOARD DOES NOT HAVE ANY ICs ON IT, SO THERE'S NO WAY IT'S BEING CONVERTED TO USB.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It seems there are only 2 main chipsets that do this: Pericom\u2019s PI7C9X111SL, and Asmedia\u2019s ASM1083.
