{"id":375,"date":"2020-04-22T11:45:37","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T11:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ishygddt.xyz.\/~blog\/?p=375"},"modified":"2022-03-08T14:06:45","modified_gmt":"2022-03-08T20:06:45","slug":"unlocking-sempron-140-on-gigabyte","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ishygddt.xyz\/~blog\/2020\/04\/unlocking-sempron-140-on-gigabyte","title":{"rendered":"Unlocking Sempron 140 on GA-MA785GM-US2H_1.0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After updating the firmware on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gigabyte.com\/Motherboard\/GA-MA785GM-US2H-rev-10\/support\">Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H (rev. 1.0)<\/a> motherboard, I was able to unlock the second core on its <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20140814021936\/products.amd.com\/en-us\/DesktopCPUDetail.aspx%3Fid%3D585\">Sempron 140 CPU<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpu-world.com\/CPUs\/K10\/AMD-Sempron%20140%20-%20SDX140HBK13GQ%20%28SDX140HBGQBOX%29.html\">specs<\/a>], metamorphosizing it into the fictional \u201cAthlon II X2 4400e\u201d CPU.<\/p>\n<p>Strangely, the BIOS update tool from Gigabyte wouldn\u2019t run on Windows 10; I had to spin up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.freedos.org\/\">FreeDOS<\/a> to flash it. (Apparently an outdated W10 Home edition build doesn\u2019t even have 16-bit EXE support <em>available<\/em>\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>When the second core was <em>enabled<\/em>, the OS wouldn\u2019t boot until I overclocked the <tt>vcore<\/tt> by about 0.1V, however. (And now it doesn\u2019t seem to successfully\u00a0<em>shut down<\/em>\u2026) I would have messed with it further, but I don't know the first thing about overclocking\u2014this being the first motherboard I\u2019ve ever owned that supported it.
